BS3 Community Centre - Butterfly

May 2025 - Permanent Display

My solo exhibition, ‘Squint’ had just finished……

when BS3 Community Development reached out and asked if I could make a mosaic to commemorate a beloved member of staff who sadly passed away in 2024.

BS3 Community Development is a charity and social enterprise that provides community services, support, and activities to enhance the well-being and opportunities of people in the BS3 area of Bristol.

I received the brief; to honour their colleague and friend by creating an image of a butterfly.

We agreed on a design, and I got to work……

Much of this piece was created in the great outdoors. It was early April 2024 and Bristol was in full explosive bloom. Something which crept it’s way into the final piece. I wanted to create something that lived and moved.

A simple butterfly design would’ve been OK but more flair was needed to commemorate such a beloved personality. I wanted to capture the insect either taking off from it’s branch, or just settling on it to visit. Whichever version you like best, that’s fine.

It was actually the nursery leaders at the community centre who……

suggested letting the kids help smash the tiles. Apparently, they loved it. I finally got to meet my little co-creators during the installation—a beautiful moment. It was a pleasure to be involved in such a wonderful commemoration. I love working with non-profits and charities especially ones which include the entire community.
